Delmarva Turnings has taken on the production of the Chesapeake Thunder bats formerly made by Talbot Turnings. We use the same patterns, types of wood and equipment as the former owner. We welcome your feedback as we aim to produce the same quality bats you have come to appreciate and love.

Here are a few tips on the use and care of your bat--
The first and most important tip is the way you hold our bat. The logo of a wood bat is placed on "face grain". Most all players are aware that you do not make contact with the ball on this side of the bat. This is the weakest area of your bat. Since the "face grain" mirrors itself on the exact opposite side of your bat, contact needs to be avoided there as well. The "edge grain" is the strongest area of your bat and is the intended impact area. Holding the logo facing straight up, or straight down, will insure that you are making contact with the "edge grain".

To help illustrate the concept of "face grain" and "edge grain", take a paperback book, approx. 1" thick. Holding the book in one hand push against the cover. Notice how it bends and gives. Now hold the book sideways and put pressure against this edge. Notice the difference in strength? This is the same concept that exists with your wood bat.

Another important factor is with what portion of the bat contact is made. The desired impact area is called the "sweet spot". You can find the "sweet spot" by holding the bat in the smallest area of the handle, with two fingers. Start tapping on the bat with your knuckle, starting at the end of the barrel and slowly moving towards the handle. You will feel vibration until you hit the "sweet spot", which will be a solid tap. The sweet spot is normally 5" to 6" from the end of the barrel.

It is important to remember that making contact with "face grain" may likely break or damage your bat. Damage is also likely to occur if impact is made in the handle area or at the end of the barrel, especially if you have a cupped bat.

Always keep your bat properly stored. Never leave it in a hot car, in the rain, etc. Proper use and care will insure better performance and a longer life for your wood baseball bat.
